Headgasket?
-> 206 Problems

#1: Headgasket? Author: dumdum0910, Location: letchworth PostPosted: Wed Jun 15, 2011 2:42 pm
    ----
ive had a suspision since ive ownened the car.
a week after i purchased the 206 i noticed a brown sludge in the coolant bottle.i was told it looks like radweld. i flushed the system last month and cleaned the bottle and refilled with antifreeze and water. i have just checked the coolant again and there seems to be an oilly substance in the water. it doesnt over heat, im not loosing oil and im not loosing coolant.
i put my finger in and its brown
what could this be? there is also like a white/grey mayo build up on the inside of the cap. the oil filler cap is clean
i have a 1.1 2003 with 61k on the clock, recently serviced

my 206 has EXACTLY the same thing with the same non-symptoms lol literally word for word, recently replaced the coolant too, only thing I can think of is maybe a small HG leak and there is a build up of it stuck in the system which keeps working its way into the expansion tank,

Have you taken the rocker cover off and looked on the underside of that? I had the same gunk in the expansion bottle but none on the oil filler cap but as soon as i took the rocker cover off and looked at the underside of it, when i did it was plain to see that the headgasket had failed. I also got a second opinion on it from a mechanic who confirmed it.

when i get paid next im going to stick some of the gasket stuff in the oil . and reflush the system and see what happens.. im just worried as if i ever come to sell the car i dont want them to turn around and say the HG has gone

im gunna persist with mine atm without getting the gasket done because its not overheating or loosing any oil or water.

It might go on for years and years, if it gets any worse I can always replace it then Smile

Do you take it a good run or just shuffle it about 2-3 miles. My car had this and after a real good run it cleared up.

If not then im afraid its your head gasket. Best to change / replace the radiator anyway as it sounds like it had radweld put in. Go to GSF for one shouldnt be more that £100 and its a job you can do yourself.

it gets both... but atleast 1 good run a week . it can wait but i might take it to a garage and see if they can stick the sniff test on it

Did you flush the radiator. Ive seen this caused by a rusty rad.

Do a compression test it will show if you have a blown gasket.

ill have to dig out my tester. surely if it had low compression the engine would be running rough?

this is whats in the coolant bottle

i put a emisions tester in the bottle to test for any gases and it didnt read anything

yup thats exactly what I have in my coolant bottle, looks identical. I took my bottle off last week and washed it out totally (took FOREVER because its double lined and the stuffs reallly sticky lol)

But its gone now, so I can guage how fast it builds up again (if it does) lol

Part of me recons the old lady owner who had it before me topped her coolant up with oil. its exactly the type of thing which would happen lol

i recommend you do the same thing, its easy to take off and put back on Smile

Have you checked under the rocker cover yet? Mine looked exactly like yours, i aswell tested it to see if i had exhaust gases going into the coolant but if came up not showing anything. I had been told that it was the headgasket and as soon as i took the head off and checked the gasket it was clear to see where it had failed. I would take it to get a experienced opinion and see what they tell you.

Thats exactly the kind of stuff I always find with second hand cars I buy... annoying as hell lol...

All I can add to this post is that I'm pretty sure when there is that sort of build up on the inside of the oil cap, it means that water is somehow coming into contact with the oil. With heat from the engine, water vapor rises to the highest point(the cap) and condensates. With the heating up and cooling down of the engine with day to day use the water and oil make a yellowy white gunge :/
So I personally think that the HG is the problem, and a similar thing is happening in the expansion tank just with a higher ratio of water to oil so it looks different,
