We have just brought a 206cc, 2002 model. When we got the car earlier this week it displayed "Passenger Airbag deactivated" followed shortly by "Airbag Fault" and the passenger airbag disarming and airbag lights are lit on the dash. I checked the connector under the passenger seat and it appears ok. I also tested the airbag dissable switch and that seem ok too (if it's left unplugged the startup message goes straight to airbag fault).
I took it to my local MOT centre that also does diagnostics and his equipment (Snap on) could communicate with all the systems except the airbag ECU. I also visited a auto electrical company and they checked the system with the Peugeot diagnostics software on a laptop. Again all the other systems could be accessed except the airbag ECU. All the fuses have been checked and are fine.
Sorry for the lengthy post. If anyone has some pointers or tips on what I can investigate/check I would be very grateful.

Multiplexed Electrical System
When disconnecting the battery to do electrics, or just to change it, you need to follow this guide. Failure to do this could result in a £600 bill from Peugeot!
* Put down the drivers window.
* Pop and Open the bonnet. Shut ALL DOORS apart from the bonnet.
* Leave the car for at least 3 minutes. This allows the BSI to shut down and go to "sleep."
* Disconnect the clamps on the battery, and change/do electrics/whatever you are planning to do.
* When reconnecting, reattach the clamps on the battery. Don't shut the bonnet yet. Leave the car for a few more minutes. This allows the car to settle.
* Lean through the drivers window, and turn the sidelights on. (Don't open the door.)
* This is called a "Soft Start" for the BSI.
* Let the car finish thinking about everything, and check all the systems etc.
* Start the car.

And yes activated or de activated the message is still the same.

I'm not so sure it's the switch tbh. More concerned that the diagnostics port is not communicating with the Airbag ECU. The Ecu must be working, of sorts, because it's sending info to the display and warning lights.
Are the airbag modules programmed to the individual car, or can I try another module?

The second place I went to used latest Peugeot Planet software and that couldn't connect to the airbag system.
They say it could be a Can Bus issue and are quoting over £200 just to check out the pin outs!

Shut the BSI system down & check all the connector plugs are clean & tight, electrical contact cleaner is best for cleaning the connectors.
Check ALL the airbag system fuses.
Airbag ecu is under the front ashtray - sometimes hidden under a flap of carpet.
DON'T use any type of test meter / test light on airbag wiring unless BOTH ends of the loom being tested are disconnected!
Test meter plus connected airbag / seatbelt pretensioner = BOOM

This evening I shut down BSI and disconnected the battery, after removing the centre console. I soldered the passenger seat airbag connector wires under the seat and checked/cleaned the connector on the airbag ecu. Checked the pins on the diagnostics port and they all seemed ok. Checked all the fuses that may have been an issue. Restarted the BSI (soft boot) and then checked the car. The airbag warnings are still the same as the 1st post...what a way to spend a Friday evening
I can't see the ecu being the problem as it is communicating with the dashboard fine, unless the error is possibly caused by faulty unit. although a faulty ecu would make sense with the non communication with the diagnostics port.
If it is possibly the Airbag ECU, can it be replaced with a used part without needing reprogramming? I have looked at the numbers on the unit and if it is a straight swap out what number needs to be the same as the one I have fitted.
also how do I access the connectors on the passenger airbags to make sure there is nothing amiss there.
