I'm out there now, pitch black, freezing cold and wishing i'd just put up with the stains on the original grey carpet.

Yes and no, this might effect the finish of the paint due to the chemicals of the paint stripper

I've had a few idea of what it could be, it sounds like it's coming from the engine lets hope it's not expensive!
