#4: Re: Rear axle bearing replacement Author: spud_owen, Location: ashby de la zouchPosted: Tue Feb 01, 2011 7:27 am ---- you can try and replace them but as said water gets into the shaft and eats away which nackers the shaft meaning that replacing the bearing is no good, also its a hard job to get the rear arm off when on the car, there are companies that sell re-conditioned ones and if you can afford it this is definatly the way to go, as getting one form the breakers can be pot luck!

Sent it of to have new stub axles pressed in and then rebuilt it myself using new peugeot bearings. Total cost is around £300 all in.
Most refurbishers will do the whole job for you but i'd already stripped it down and bought the pug bearings and seals so didn't want to waste the £90

Changing the Bearings isn't a difficult job, a bit fiddly if you've got ham hands but it can be done.

I prefer to do preventative maintanence than reactive repairs where possible.
#13: Re: Rear axle bearing replacement Author: PugJH, Location: NorthantsPosted: Wed Feb 09, 2011 7:17 am ---- I got the old yellow slip from MOT yesterday about rear offside bearing, so this is my years project to get this sorted, i was thinking used rear axle with lower miles, but then i thought about a new bearing etc, i can see that the cost of a used beam is lower than the cost of the bearing, unless you DIY it which i would if i had time :D.
So just thinking about what to do, obviously a new bearing would/should feel better, is it a good idea to reaplace both sides while im at it, be like reconditioned internals as apposed to half fixed or a used beam.
When replacing a bearing, what else do i need in mine, broken parts clear out aswel as the shafts and ends being worn?
#14: Re: Rear axle bearing replacement Author: giveitsomebar, Location: redditchPosted: Wed Feb 09, 2011 7:25 am ---- the thing is with these rear axles is that for one person it may be an extra £150 - 200 for all the kit to re build an axle but for the dozens are people that are just swapping them and maybe getting 5000 miles before there 2nd hand axle does the same thing is going down the exact same road as the 205 gti. pug axles are s**t we know that but for everyone who scraps there slightly worn axle because they cant be arsed to fork out for a proper job on it is another axle which in the future could be needed. 205 axles are like rocking horse s**t now and are fetching £400-500 for a decent one. yeah there are alot of 206's about but already we are getting to this problem , i belive someone said he has at least 12 people waiting for him to get axles in the other day?! this is madness even if you axle is so worn there is alot of play in it, its still not the end of the world you can buy every part for an axle to make it virtually brand new again and the only way i would suggest replacing the whole axle is if its rusted and beond repair

But im just going to look online at part prices and have a look at doing it mysel, i heard the noise about 3months ago and thought it was my front boot, but i'll get this sorted
