A service / exchange unit will be clean, fully overhauled & come with a 12 month warranty.
With alternators & starter motors its worth paying a little extra for a unit you know isnt going to give any trouble after the hassel of fitting it.

Thats how service / exchange works
You pay a surcharge on top of the new unit price which is then returned to you when you return the old unit.
