Ste's 1.1 8v Zest 3 Project - 20/12/2008 to Now.

First of all welcome to my crazy thread of modifications to a car that most wouldn’t even bother modifying (due to the small engine).

Oh and yes, this will be a VERY long read Rolling On The Floor Laughing

I've actually been typing it out since I first started modding my car and spotted the 'Projects Car' section on the website, but I've been waiting a while to post it until I had quite a bit done to my car to actually give people something to read about rather than just a quick 2 min thread, Anyways, here's the progress so far.

Some of you will know me some of you won’t, the people that have met me will agree that I try to keep my car looking as nice as possible and detail it wayyy too much even in the colder months..

To most people, this car would be a simple A to B run about, to me it was my First Car and soon became a project..

I bought the car completely standard on 20th December 2008 with 23022 Miles on the clock.

Chapter 1 - The Start Of The Madness..

Here's how it looked the day I got it home..

For a first car this sounded a lot of money to part with, but oh well, I liked the car, it had all the sports bumpers fitted from factory and the added bonus of been a 'special edition' which IIRC got me Colour Coded Bump Strips, a Spoiler and some nicety’s inside..

The car stayed untouched for about a month, until I found this crazy place called 206Info, I joined the site just shy of a month after passing my test and buying my first car, that’s when I got the modding bug..

Here's where the real story starts..

The first thing I bought for the car were some Lexarse opps sorry I mean Lexus Lights, shortly after I got myself a K&N Induction Kit (Purely for the noise really) and a Sony Head unit.

I then found after buying them, I couldn't actually fit any of it to the car Sad

My STUPID insurance company (Which at the time was already charging me £1600 a year to insure the car) wanted an extra £350 for some Lexus Lights worth £60 and a K&N Induction Kit which gave the car a whopping hair dryers worth of extra BHP, so the parts I'd got for my car had to stay in my room for a while until I found a new insurance company.

Along came Adrian Flux to save the day, charging £100 more (£1700 a year) I could add anything to the car that didn’t increase the BHP of the car.

So on went the parts.. Which turned it to looking rather ummm yeah..

Anyway, at the time I liked them so left them on there for a while, I then turned to the interior of the car, Looking at small mods that would add that small difference I was looking for.

I started to look at what’s different in each model spec of the 206 and found some parts that I liked, mainly the Silver Air Vent Buttons and Silver door handles so I started looking out for them, it didn’t take long for the Vent Buttons to pop up on Info and I grabbed a set at a pretty decent price, soon followed by a set of Silver handles from a GTi that was breaking on the good old bay.

Then that was followed by Green Footwell LED Strips, some people like these, others think there Chav-tastic, personally I find them useful for finding things that I've put in the footwells when its dark, and they give a nice glow to the car when the doors are opened.

They were wired in so they only come on when you open the doors or take the key out of the ignition (Basically exactly like the interior courtesy light works) They can’t be turned on while driving ect so there is no distraction while driving which is how I wanted them, purely for getting in/out of the car.

Soon came the time to get myself a 206Info sticker, and amazingly I didn’t put it on wonky which seems to be a trend of Info.

Since the day of owning my car I never liked the fuel cap, I always wanted a nice silver GTi one, no matter how hard I searched though, I could never find one that was at a price I was willing to pay, until one day Mr. Racerxbon was selling some of his that he had collected up, I got myself a nice Black Bolted Fuel Cap which sparked all the future ideas of my car off you'll understand soon Wink

The day finally came where I woke up, looked at my car and thought 'you know what, those Lexus lights really don't do anything for the car' so off I went on a search for some new rear lights, Since I loved the Black on Silver effect of the Fuel Cap I managed to narrow the search for new lights down to some Ultra Black LED Clusters found on eBay for a good price of £120ish they arrived pretty quick so that weekend I fitted them to the car, but they still didn’t quite look right..

A trip to Halfords and £10 later and I was a happy chappy, Silvertec Bulbs really do finish the job off nicely.

But then my car didn’t match, I had nice LED Rear lights, but a standard Red Fog Light and Red 3rd Break Light, Back on the bay I went and ordered a Smoked Fog Light and Black LED 3rd Break Light, they also arrived fast and later that week was fitted to the car.

Finally the Rear was looking rather nice, I'm not keen on de-badging so that won’t be happening to this car, however there’s still something missing, Yup a back box and nice pipe.. Maybe that’s for some other time though..

This was the end of the modding line for me for a few months, I was happy with how the car was taking shape, but it was all too quickly and money wasn’t stretching far enough and with Birthdays and other financial needs creeping up on me I thought I'd have a break from modifying the car.

Chapter 2 - A short time later..

Keeping with the theme 'Black on Silver' I thought I'd upgrade my Headlights too, I found some nice Black CCFL Filled Angel Eyes on eBay that I loved the look of, but then, people started talking about Black Masked Valeo's and how hard they are to come by, I searched the forum for pictures of them and instantly knew they were the lights I wanted, the look of them ticked every box of what I wanted for the front end of my car, I got lucky and someone posted a link to a website that was selling some at the time for a price of £260ish me and another member on the site ordered a set and awaited delivery for them, however 2 weeks passed with no sign of the lights turning up.

From here it was a long wait of about 2 months until we both got our money back after a lot of hassle and calling up ect, but that left me with yet again no new lights, luckily a member on Info was kind enough to sell me hers (Thankoooo Hayley) when she was selling her car, so I finally got my nice set of Black Valeo's for a very very good price.

On they went, and still to this day I think they are one of the best purchases’ I've made for my car.

Looking at the car, it seemed the wheels really let the car down, on a rather large scale! I didn’t have the money for alloys and I really don't like aftermarket Wheel Trims 90% of them look quite tacky trying to be fake alloys, so I decided to break out the spray paint, I sprayed the badly damaged Wheel Trims Graphite Gray and Lacquered them up to give them a nice shine. Poor Man’s Alloys FTW!

The next mod was only a small one, but made the car look quite nice in my mind, A new ABS Bonnet Vent I got them when they were fairly new and was selling for a rather low price, I think I paid about £15 Posted for mine, now they’re selling for over £30, It came in the standard plastic black, so yet again out came the sprays, I decided Gloss Black was the way to go with this part of the car.

Once again money got a little tight so the modding was put on hold for a while, during this time I noticed my petrol consumption was rather high compared to most of the other 206's returning a mere 32mpg, now to some it won’t sound too bad, but remember this is only a 1.1, 32mpg in my eyes is shocking.

I tried a few things including driving a lot steadier (this soon became very boring and I felt like I was actually holding the traffic up) after a while I decided to turn to the trusty Info'ers, I was pointed in the direction of a change of spark plugs, so out with the old and in with the new.

This gave me a slightly better MPG but nothing to write home about, so I looked into it further and asked
more questions.. It turned out to be the K&N Induction Kit that had been in the car since I first started modding. Even though I loved the sound of it, it had to go.. I refused to replace it with a standard Peugeot Air Filter so I got myself a K&N Panel Filter from another Info member who sold his 1.1 not long back and had the filter lying around. Petrol Consumption was back to normal after the swap over and everything was good..

In July 2009 I decided to finally get some alloys for the poor car, I got a set of 'Fodres' from a 2000 plate pre-plexed GTi, They were pretty battered and needed a lot of TLC to bring them back up to a good standard.

I estimated it would take me a month of on and off work to get these completed, unfortunately I hardly got the time to do them so still even over 3 months later, there still sitting in the living room unfinished, 2 are fully refurbed and ready for the tyres to be put back on the other two still need some work, I'm hoping to have these on the car shortly after Christmas.

Chapter 3 - So we hit 2010..

Well December was a no modding month on the car due to Tax, Service and MOT times all coming up at once, but here we are in 2010, a new year, a new list of mods..

First I wanted to sort out some 'bass' as the system in my car is rather flat.. So I went out and baught a cheap but chearful sub, which actually turned out to be a rather good buy!

I got a 12" Edge sub, due to wanting one quickly, I went to good old halfords for it, and BONUS they had a deal on, so I got it at Audio Internet prices from a highstreet store Thumbs Up

I fitted it without any problems, seriously guys, these things are easy to fit, so don't start worrying if you get one and want to fit it!

Once it was fitted it was testing time, and even though it was a brand new sub, that hadnt bedded in yet (Most subs take upto 30 hours play to bed in and deliver their true potental of bass) it kicked out enough bass to make all my mirrors shake out of place and for my ears to nearly bleed lol!

Chapter 4 - The Tragic Accident..

That got you worried didnt it Razz

well it was an 'accident' as such the damage done to the car was not intentional (Or so I was told)

Some very kind pupil at work decided to de-aerial my car for me, by kicking his rugbyball directly at the thing! Needless to say, it did the trick, aerial was bent over, base seal was broken, and the roof was slightly dented, so I had 2 options, replace the base and aerial and reseal it as the dent was under the base and you couldnt see it with a base on..

Or, fully remove the base and aerial, smooth the roof out and get it vinyl wrapped/sprayed, I chose the latter and more expensive option Laughing

For a quick fix to stop the water getting in I taped up the roof

I then ordered some vinyl to get the roof wrapped, it arrived and I set about repairing the roof

I also rememberd about a dent in the rear of the roof, which was there before I got the car, so I fixed that too

Then time to wrap the roof

The stuff was totally useless, really thin, and complete crap.. So it came off, the car got booked in for a roof spray and dropped off 2 weeks later, this is a picture of it at the spray shop awaiting spraying

I got a call less than 24 hours later saying my car was done and ready to pick up Very Happy

so off I went to collect it.. On arrival I spotted this...

OHHHH YES! Thats what I'm talking about! Gloss Black perfect finish, One chuffed Ste!

Back home and checking out the shine..

Chapter 5 - The Time Has Come..

In 3 weeks time, the 206 will wave its final goodbye to the Stealies and get a new set of wheels, I have FINALLY finished re-furbing them after having them since July 2009!

Here's some final pictures of them before they get tyres fitted and put on the car in 3 weeks time.

Chapter 6 - The Weekend Of Many Mods..

So.. 10:30pm arrived one Friday night and Ste got bored, so out he went to the car and pulled a random object off it..

Here's what happened..

Saturdays progress consisted of, Gloss Black Mirrors, Gloss Black Front Lion, Alloys been Fitted, and the removal of my fog lights Which left the car looking like this Laughing

Then I put it back together, minus the lights to take a side shot to show the alloys for those asking to see them Smile

Time for Black Masked Fog Lights!!! I baked the lights in the oven - Gas Mark 2 / 150°C for anyone thinking of doing this Smile

for about 20 mins.. Kept taking them out every 5 mins to check on the progress and slowly take them appart at each removal from the oven.

Then went ahead and sanded them down to key them for the spray, primed them with a couple of thin even coats, and then sprayed them with the black again a few even thin coats.. This is them finished with the glass placed on them but not sealed..

The weekend is almost at a close, and here is whats happened:

DIY Gloss Black Wingmirrors.. I'm actually quite happy with these, still feel like polishing them up even more though Laughing

Chapter 7 - From Then To Now..

Well it's just before New Year 2011! So to revive a dead thread and keep you updated on the progress of the car, here's what I've been getting upto - It's not alot, but it's an update Razz

Firstly, I decided after looking at my car it was seriously time to get her lowered! So thats exactly what happened..

Off everything came..

Will cleaning up the bolts lol.

And all back together.

Ahhhh thats better!

The old vents were looking abit tattered and needed a good polish, but instead I decided to re-sand them flat and fully polish them back up to a nice mirror shine.. Here's a 50/50 one is sanded the other is polished..

And re-fitted Smile

While I was in the mood of making things look alittle better I also re-blacked the calipers.

And de-badged the rear even though I said I never would lol..

Then came some HEKO wind deflectors..

I then stopped modding for awhile again to build up some money, only to be met with this 2 days before my MOT..

Which was a straight MOT fail as I knew, so the car never went in for it's MOT instead this lot was delivered to my house and fitted.. At the same time we also changed my topmounts as they were on the way to failing too.

Also while we were fitting all that we noticed my break pads were pretty worn and low and the droplinks had also bit the dust so they were replaced too - which lead to one puggy sailing through yet another MOT!

It pays to check your car a month or so before the MOT - saves a heck of a lot of hasstle having to go back and forth, I do it everytime but left it slightly late this year Sad

lol..

Anyway moving on, It's nearly the end of the year and my 2011 plans for the car are already moving, I want a new exhaust in the new year which reminded me about a nice little item I bought last year..

So I dug it out of storage and got it sprayed up today..

It still needs laqcuring but that can wait until tomorrow to give it time to dry fully Smile

Also a few days ago this nice little addition arrived at my door Wink

RRP £130+ I paid £25 delivered Very Happy

- there's slight damage to the fiberglass on the drivers side which will take all of about an hour to fix properly, then a nice sand down and respray in EZR will be done and the bonnet gap filled!

30/12/10

Todays progress...

The bumper trim is now laqured, flatted and polished up ready for fitment

Anddddddddddd the badless grille damage which started out like this

has now been fixed Very Happy

re-fiberglassed the bad area and then P38 and sanded smooth to leave me with this

Which will be primered on monday if I get the time Thumb Up

Another quick update - 04/01/2010

Just had a full cat back Powerflow system fitted Very Happy

Chapter 8 - 2011 Was A Quiet Year For Modding

Soooo it's finally a time for another update.

I have changed my dial's LED's from Orange to white using a kit bought from ebay

The rear of the car was then lowered by Kyle (Gti180Boy on here) Can't honestly recommend this guy enough, absolute top guy and extremely genuine when you meet him!

I sprayed up my gully strips in VW Diamond Black as I was fed up with the faded look

The car then got a clean - Not really a MOD but meh!

All A, B and C Pillars then got sprayed Black with Rubber Vinyl Spray

A 307 spiller was purchased and fitted

I then decided that I wanted more VW Diamond Black so I sprayed up both my wing mirrors from Gloss Black to VW Dimond Black

The car wasn't low enough, it HAD to go lower - Coilovers fitted and torsion bar adjusted (Again)

Then came some new shoes - Toyo Proxes T1R's Wink

The rear 3 windows got tinted in a 'dark smoke'

Chapter 9 - The First Few Months of 2012 - Ice Ice Baby

So 2012 has hit us, and this year I want to sort out the sound system in the Pug!

After a lot of thinking and swapping of ideas I settled to go with a JBL build, keeping as much as possible to the JBL brand and only swaying away for little items, the reasons are simple, I like OEM, 206's had the option of a JBL sound system from the factory, not a power system but still JBL was an option from the start so thats what I went with.

I then starting thinking SQ (Sound Quality) vs an SPL (Sound Pressure Level) Build I opted for an SQ build as I really don't care all that much for Sound Pressure.

Let the purchasing begin!

First up I ordered a set of JBL-P6563c 3 Way Componets

Once they arrived I then ordered a JBL GTO-1004e Amplifier the P6563c's are 2Ohm 3Ways which means this Amp would push 150watts RMS into them, plenty for an SQ Build.

Then came the main part of the build, Two JBL P1222's, Each sub has Two 2Ohm voice coils, I've wired these so they are seen as one 2Ohm load on the Amp.

Powering the Subs is a JBL GTO 7001 Mono Block, At 2Ohms this pushes 700watts RMS into each Sub, again more than enough for an SQ build.

I fitted the Crossovers in the small pocket to the rear of the door cards

And the tweeters were put in adjustable pods on the mirror covers

New battery terminals were ordered

Along with a Volt Display Distro Block

The boxes for the Subs were built, this is a temp job as larger ones are actually required for these subs

All wired up and Volt Display working

Then I ordered a JBL Remote Sub Level and installed it in the small compartment near the steering wheel

Not ICE Related but I also sprayed up the rear window plugs as they had faded and looked abit kaka!

Time to light her up! I wanted the Subs to be lit up at night, a nice Ice White SMD LED Strip soon sorted that out! This is wired to only work when the boot is opened.

I also fitted smaller strips in the door pockets for the Crossovers, Again this only comes on as the doors are opened, the same as the curtsy light.

And also some under door lights, these are 'Ice White' but look blueish on the phone camera, I also have the same SMDs fitted in the footwells, again as always these only light up as the doors are opened, they're also on a switch so I can turn them off even when the doors are open.

And finally, I've ordered myself some Pressed Plates BOYAH!

Alloys are ready to go on, just need to go get the tyres fitted Then glossing the mirrors, and then it'll be lowering and a backbox as there both still standard..

Not vinyl the vinyl went in the bin after about 10 mins of it been on haha! Got it fully sprayed lasts longer and looks mucho better! I wasnt happy with the finish of the vinyl, and when it comes to my car, it HAS to be the right finish lol! For the min yeah I have no radio but I'm fitting an internal aerial into the roof lining in the next few weeks

Ah i see, i skim read your post (looked at pics lol) I did think it was an amazing finish for vinyl! I'm going to be doing some chrome vinyling for the 309 soon, it'll be a hard thing to get looking good i think Matty - check the admin's join dates, we've been on here for a few weeks sorting the site out. The post counts are in admin section and here and there on there site.

The lights are quite hard to get hold of now, they was when I got them but there getting even more rare lol..
