why? 
i though why the axle is damaged is because the bearing lub. is drying out?

yes, but that is after the grease is dried out.
i can't imagine it will rust or water will get in if there is full of grease

My car is lowered. Will replacing the rear axle have any affect on it's ride height?

sorry to revive an old thread. I noticed that it was suggested that you can replace the parts of the axle. I am wonderng where it would be possible to get a replacement shaft for the axle. I know that you can get the bearings from pug themselves but do they supply the axle shaft?
