As title says.
Rattling noise (ball-bearing?) but my mech recons it's not the clutch release as that would make noise when pressing pedal.
It was also replaced along with the clutch plate/disk about a year ago (genuine pug).
So what is it exactly?

same as the release bearing, mine does it too. and used to to it on my 106 until i couldn't bare it anymore so had the clutch and release bearing changed.

It's logical to expect the clutch release bearing to make most of the noise when depressing it as that's when it's under load but it can rattle in its cage when fully up and can squeal when worn and under very light load when pedal is fully up
Sometimes if you pull the clutch lever on the gearbox even fuller back from the rest position and the noise stops then you know what it is for certain

So are you saying it could be the release bearing even though it stops when pedal is pressed?
Not pleased if it's this as it was fitted new and genuine (Valeo) about a year ago.

Yes, especially a loose rattling in its cage or a squealing when cold which lessens as it warms up
A rattling or chattering is just that though and they have been known to stop doing it on their own as the release bearing is just catching at the rest position. Try pulling the lever back a bit further and see if it stops then you'll know and you can show your mechanic

Also, it only stops when fully depressing pedal and only does it 3 out of 5 times at varying level of noise.

The cable should never be pulling so tight that there is no slack at all at the lever when pedal is fully up

Clutch cable are self adjusting due to the design of it (self adjusting mechanism) U better dun touch it, once u remove it, will be pain in the butt to put it right again.
I am sure will be the bearing for the clutch cause i have similar problem and it gone when i replace with complete clutch kit.
After u warm up the car or drive for some distance will it get better?

Now don't make the guy paranoid 
No one said anything about removing cables, just checking for the 5mm or so of slack which the self adjusting cable should automatically put into the system. It's how you check that the cable's been installed and adjusting correctly
