#1: 1.6 Overheats in traffic after minor crash Author: LongerSummers, Posted: Mon Nov 25, 2019 11:29 pm ---- Hi there,
Does anyone know the normal operating temp of the 1.6 - coolant? I have had it at 90 and above recently.
background = I bought it at 108k miles and all was ok. Then last week I hit a Taxi, the taxi had cut me up then began engine braking up a hill, before fully stopping with no lights at the crest of the hill. Hood damaged (I replaced it, fitting an non crashed one), fan snapped at one place (I replaced it & fitted a newer / unbroken one). I’m guessing I also have a radiator leak?
Now the car overheats once I’m in traffic, and the oil temp goes high. I also get the “stop” light come on. By that time I’m switching off the engine, looking for quiet side roads to escape the traffic and drive steadily down in order to reduce the high temperatures.
Any advice as to what I should check and how?

Are you having to top up the coolant regularly?
It's a 1.6 16v 206CC isn't it?
#3: Re: 1.6 Overheats in traffic after minor crash Author: Richardf, Location: Southampton UKPosted: Tue Nov 26, 2019 7:01 pm ---- I had the same problem and it turned out to be the relays and associated wiring/connections in front of and just to the side of the radiator. Just touching one or two and the wires came away. Although they are behind the plastic shroud panel, weather eventually gets in there and the connections all start corroding.
A way round it is if you have air-con, then turn that on as it seemingly bypasses the (now broken) relay system and gets the fan working, thus cooling the engine down.
I got all my replacement parts from a breaker's yard.

The very early 206 the harness was separate & easily replaceable - after that it's part of the engine bay harness.
If your skilled with a soldering iron you can chop out the old rotton part of your harness & solder in the replacement.
The early harness uses a different connector plug for the cooling fan to the later version so that would also require attention.
I've done a couple of these over the years, not a bad job & removes all the rot.
