Decided to take a look under my bonnet today due to car overheating, and discovered my coolant tank empty. I only filled this up about 2 months ago (again as my car was overheating and there was no coolant)

Anyone know what the main cause of this is likely to be?

Not sure if its relevant but this only started when I had a new radiator and fan installed at the beginning of the year...?

(please nobody say head gasket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Head gasket failure checks;-
1) You can get a "sniff test" done by a garage. They check the coolant for exhast gases etc. and that will indicate if it is headgasket.
2) Check is if the suface of the water in header tank has a brown or coloured scum on it - again another indication of headgasket.
3) Check is if the oil filler has a mayonaise like (white/yellowish milky sludge) inside.
4) with the engine and exhaust system thoroughly warm is water droplets or quite a bit of steam coming out the exhaust pipe? Put your hand close to the end of the pipe - does your hand get wet?

NOTE though that with exception of the sniff test these are indicatoin and not a garauntee of headgasket failure. The more of the above you have the more likely it is to be headgasket.

Personally I don't believe in coincidence; get whoever did the radiator and water pump to check their work.

You check your fluids every 2 months then or?

The above is good advice but im also going to suggest you check your fluid levels a lot more often!

You may well also have a very small leak in your heater matrix/pipework and it is my opinion that this can occur without being very noticeable until gradually over time you spot that your passenger footwell is saturated with water.

This happened to me recently and despite noticing it, I left things until it exploded. The o-rings between the pipework are a common cause of this issue, so worth getting that checked out (£12 replacement pipe and o-rings from your local pug garage)

So new radiator fitted then problems began ?

Have you check all rubber seals are tight and secure, hose clips etc ?

Any puddles under the car after being parked up ?

Run the engine and have a look underneath.

A temp. Fix could be to add radweld into the tank. Halfords or other motor factors will have it.

Refill then try Radweld, could be a cheap fix.
