the speedo doesn't work. do you know where it gets its signal from ? some say its got a cable, others from abs sensor and others from sensor on gearbox. any thoughts ?

On a 2000 gti the signal comes from the speed sensor on the back of the gearbox. It then goes to the ecu and then to the speedo.
Does the odometer work?
