Ok guys I need some serious input here, honest opinions and any facts you may have.

My X-reg 1.4LX flew through the MoT in April, no issues. It has 150k on the clock and pretty good condition for it's year.

A couple of weeks ago I heard from my long lost son, haven't heard from him in 10 years (he's 13 now) and he needs his Dad.

The catch is I'm 20 miles north of Newcastle and he's in Portsmouth. It's 358 miles each way. It's complicated working out travel plans to coincide with school holidays, my shifts at work, etc. The bus is a non-starter, it's 11hrs and a nightmare trip. The plane is cheap but there's the problem of very limited availability. And the train is a good option but can be very expensive.

So that leaves the car. Probably around £110 in fuel according to a fuel calculator and the ease of door-to-door.

My question is would you really trust a car of that age to be doing these long distance trips?

If servicing has been regular and stuff like the Cambelt has been changed then go for it.
Or just hire a Peugeot 107 on a weekend if you want to travel cheap.

Thanks guys.

To be honest I think it'll be ok. 358 miles to get there this first time isn't unreasonable, the car often does 300 miles in a day with no issues and as long as I get down there in one piece then I'm not concerned about the drive home as I have breakdown recovery. Obviously I don't want to have that hassle though.

Good point about the cam belt. I'll have a new one put on just as a precaution before Xmas. Probably doesn't need one but I'm not taking chances. I may invest in some high powered driving lamps too seeing as I'll be doing a lot of night driving on unlit roads, kind of makes things less tiring on the eyes.

As 90% of the trip will be motorway driving it shouldn't put too much stress on the car either I suppose. Once down there I'll be on public transport into the city most of the time as I hate city driving and parking costs are horrendous I'm told.

Cars are tough things... As mentioned before, ensuring that it stays well maintained and serviced will allow you to do the miles you need to do.

Of course wear and tear will manifest itself in a shorter time (due to more miles), but that is with every car.

I have seen Pugs come past on forums and within the Facebook group which have over 210k miles and are still going strong, due to tender loving care.

Take good care of it, and it will take good care of you Smile

I'd have no issue doing such a journey apart from the physical demands, and planning at least one stop somewhere mid-point, but I'd always be keeping one eye on the temperature gauge as mine had a bit of history with motorways and long journeys, due to the fan relays not being up to scratch!

I hope the journey goes smooth!
