My wife has recently bought an 04 1.4Hdi SW and all was well for a while but reccently it's started misbehaving when starting from warm. It's always started perfectly from cold, and will run all day from then. However, sometimes when left for a while, it won't re-start. We've had our local garage have a look and they couldn't find anything obvious in the time they had available (no fault codes stored) but changed the crank sensor as a start. I have found though, that there appears to be a link to the coolant temperature gauge. If the gauge moves when the ignition is turned on then it'll start perfectly. If the needle on the gauge stays in the 'off' position it won't (it just turns over but will not fire). I've found that if you keep turning the ignition on and off, it will eventually move and then the car will start but on occasion, we've had to wait for the car to cool enough to be fine. The obvious fault is the coolant temperature sender but is there any way to test it without removing or changing it and would that really stop the car from starting?

First thing I'd do is disconnect the ETS connector and clean up the connector contacts and the ETS contacts with electrical contact cleaner (nothing else)

Just spray and wait a few minutes until it evaporates and then reconnect

Sounds like the ETS is losing contact when hot but is working fine otherwise.

I'll give that a bash. My thinking is that there could possibly be increased resistance when the sensor is warm?

Well it's back to the drawing board; I fitted a new Coolant Temperature Sensor and it hasn't cured the problem.
