hey guys.

before i start the car is a 206 GTI, year-2000 (W)

jumped in the car today, started it up perfectly fine, drove down the road, again perfectly fine. Came to a roundbout took my exit and the GTI just died, fully cut out, was p**sing down and wipers stopped so had to hit the brakes hard!!

when i say died i meen everything stopped, all electrics, engine EVERYTHING.

naturally i tried to start it again and the engine turned over, spluterd but didnt start then just went bk to turning over. This was followed by a nice puff of smoke from behind the steering wheel Shocked Shocked

tried to put the hazards on, nothing just made a very loud and fast clicking noise, wipers, lights etc done the same. the hazards then did work then after 5 mins went off and the loud fast clicking came bk and the switch didnt turn them off untill they came bk on 5 mins later and i did turn them off as a precaution.

all the clock/date has reset, my HU has reset the needles on the dash wer going mental and the warning lights (handbrake, stop light, EML, ABS etc) wer all flickering when trying to use wipers and start the car etc.

luckely i had a few mates behind me who pushed me out the way, just glad i wasnt on the motorway or somthing!

i called the AA and he towed me home, he reckons the "ignition switch" decided today was the day to pack up, what do you guys think, sound about right??

is this an easy fix or do you all think it could be somthing else?

any help would be great!!!

if you need to know anything else please just ask Smile

on a lighter note she made 140bhp on the rollers today Smile

thanks guys,

Karl.

Did the AA guy not put a fault reader on it?
Never heard of the ignition switch causing all electrics to go like that.
I'm thinking it could be something a bit more serious like possibly a cooked BSI.

Were any changes made to the electronics while it was at the RR?

Sounds like a knackered ECU/BSI.. Water in engine bay? :S

That is a complete random guess btw. However stating year of car will help Wink

he didnt put a fault reader on it no just checked everything was getting power from the battery, which it was.

he said that with smoke coming from behind the wheel and all the relays clicking (not getting the right power though them) he said he would be certain thats what it was.

no electrics where altered on the RR just drove on, handbrake on and ran. The car worked perfectly fine after this with no issues at all.

the car is a 2000 (w) GTI

the engine bar was totally dry, was water here n there which had ran off the wings but nothing major just normal.

"IF" it was the ECU would it be a case of getting a new one or can you use second hand ones from a breakers??

I would think it's wierd your car was on a rolling road then dies later on. Not saying it has anything to do with the problem just seemed a coincidence. I would have a guess at the above also, sounds like a ecu/bsi issue.

I would get codes read first, or wait unil one of the Lee's sees this post as they are the experts.

However if it is a new ECU you will need: ECU, key with transponder, and all the locks.

smoke behind the steering wheel sounds odd too.

ok i will do.

ok well i should easily be able to get all that from a breakers yard.

when you say all the locks, would that be ignition barrel, doors and boot??

as surely the doors would just work of the keyfob and not need the locks changed but obviously keep the old key incase i needed it...?

was i was thinking is if the ignition switch has totally burnt out surely this would cut the car out and stop the electrics from working, because if it sudenly isnt getting the right power the stalks for the wipers/headlights etc aint going to get the power they should thus stoppinng working...

same for the car actually running, it would be like it being turned off...?

as it does still turn over just doesnt start lol

may sound dumb here but check the earth leads to the gearbox and onto the body, if one of them goes it causes all sorts of electrical issues, start here its free lol

it was just with the smoke from behind the steering wheel which got the alarm bells ringing big time!

will go have a look and see if there any loose earth leads.
