Hi, I am new to the forum and could really do with some advice. I have an X-plate 206 1.4 with 88,000 miles on the clock. Car has been running great considering its age up until last week. Was driving and my car started to lose power, rev up to 4,000, cut out without warning and the sound of water running down the passenger side of the car. I have to say that my Engine Management has at no point came on during this. I arrange for my car to be looked at by my local garage, who diagnosed that the over revving was down to the 'potentiometer'. They were good and cleaned all this up for me, but did advise that it was on its way out. Car has now stopped over revving.
I was also told that they had filled the coolant and that this was the cause of the sound of water as the resevoir was completely empty, but they also found I had no air filter in the car!! Spark plugs have been checked and are ok. Was told car was ok to pick up and on the initial drive home less than 5 mins everything seemed ok that was this morning. Took it for a run round the block tonight and the sound of water was back and it stalled twice on me and coolant resevoir is empty again.....I really need advice on what could be causing the problem. oil cap was too tight for me to get off to see if the coolant had mixed with oil, so checked the dipstick instead and the oil looks good. Can anyone give me some advice on what could be the problem?

Well first thing I would do is find out where the coolant is leaking. Fill it up and allow engine yo get up to to temperature whilst watching the car for leaks. If you can't see any leaks externally then its leaking internally either via the head gasket into the cylinders and then it getting burnt off, will be white smoke from exhaust if it's leaking bad enough. Otherwise its leakkng into the oil in which case your oil level will be rising up over a period off time without any extra oil being added.
Couple of checks you can do if possible is remove the spark plugs and check the colour and condition of them will be clear to see if coolant has been burning in the cylinders.
Finally just to rule it out check to make sure your heater matrix isn't leaking by feeling the carpet in both front footwells for moisture which would suggest its leaking.
Hope that helps

Thank you for your reply. Spark plugs were checked and are fine, as is oil. Garage let it run and made no mention of any white smoke from exhaust. It must have dumped a lot to have been filled on friday and today, and it has been with garage until today. Is it worth having a head gasket repaired or should i cut my losses and scrap it?
