Hi,
My sister has given me her 206 which broke down on her then was towed back by the AA. The AA man said that it was probably a failed cambelt. I can see that there are a few teeth missing there, so I guess that's the fault.

At the moment we are trying to decide whether to take it to the scrap yard, try to fix the engine damage (I guessing there would be quite a bit) or get a new engine. This is a 2002 1.1 206 with about 80,000 miles.

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Thanks,
Susan

get a new engine. you can pick them up for less than £100 easily. i'd recommend changing the timing belt and water pump while the new 1 is off the car to avoid the embarrasment of having it happen again Laughing

What sort of speed was she doing when it broke? You might have just got away with a few bent valves but you won't know until someone takes the head off, probably about £70 for someone to take the head off. Then whatever parts are needed & labour to put it all back together.

A new engine might cost in the region of £150 + fitting.

It depends how much you think the car is worth as there are a lot of cheap 1.1 206's out there. If it where me I'd look at other 206's.

Thanks for the replies! I'm guessing it's either a new engine, then..or the scrapyard..

Ebay it - spares or repairs, start the price at just under the scrap value & buyer tows it away.

Some silly little chav will snap it up, they love 206's & will pay over the odds.

If you're leaning towards repairing it, stick another belt on first and turn it over - you might have got away without any damage. I'd rather spend a bit more repairing my own engine too than taking a punt with a donor engine from a scrapper.
