Hi,

First time posting on a forum about car, so apologies if I miss anything when posting.

I have recently bought a Peugeot 206 1.4 HDI. When I bought the car the engine itself looked quite messy. I was told that some spilt oil on it, causing the mess. Test drove it and it felt fine, picked up good and no lights on the dashboard and was cheap. So thought it’d to a good car to try to fix up and learn how to work on cars. It’s got over 130k on the clock.

I recently did an oil change (first time I’ve ever done one). Yesterday I decided to check the oil level while cleaning the car and noticed it was practically empty. There have been a few drops of oil here and there since I bought the car, but nothing significant enough to account for such low level of oil. Also, there appears to be oil all over the front of the engine. It looks old and gunky, so I don’t think it’s the new oil I put in.

Other than that, I noticed that the hose leading to the lower part of the radiator is loose (I can move it in and out). There seems to be a lot of oil in that area. Can this be related in any way to the loss of oil in any way? How is the connection for the hose supposed to be secured so it doesn’t move freely?

I’ve added a pictures but I’m not sure how well they will show the mess on the engine.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, how is the coolant situation in the expansion tank?

If all is well with cooling system, the oil around that area might suggest the oil feed to the turbo might leak, so only noted at higher RPMs.

I noticed that the coolant level wasn't at the max point over the weekend and refilled it. It's been sitting on max ever since. One thing I find odd is that the engine doesn't high 90 degrees on the temp gauge on the dashboard. It barely goes above 80, even after I've driven it for a while. Not sure if that's normal behaviour.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but how could I confirm that the turbo oil feed is leaking? Could I have someone revving the car while I look for a leak at the oil feed?

I cleaned the engine today to see if I can get a better idea of where the leak is coming from and I noticed behind the heat shield next to the oil cooler. Looked like old, dirty oil. I cleaned it up the best I could and the leak has seemed to have stopped.

The only thing that perplexing me at the moment is that there was a bit of oil leak here and there, but surely there would be more if the oil level went from nearly full to almost nothing in a matter of 2/3 weeks.

I've got one specimen like yours here, and coolant hose would also be loose if previous owner didn't put a cable tie round it:) Seems a common issue when it comes off a bracket:

The amount if oil between the dipstick's min and max measures about 1 litre. Perhaps you didn't recheck the level after the oil change, and it went down as it settled round the engine.

Wash off all of the old caked oil with brush and engine degreaser, then look for leaks when it's clean, will be easier to spot where they come from.

Diesels don't tend to run hot. Recheck during summer and then see if perhaps the thermostat is stuck a bit open.
